Cemeteries as Translocal Contact Zones: Navigating Regulations, Unwritten Rules and Divergent Expectations in Luxembourg City

Abstract Migration, intercultural encounters and integration do not cease with death, but are taken the deceased into cemetery grounds. This chapter explores translocal dimension of cemeteries, where diverse expectations practices confronted by, engage respond to regulations unwritten rules this particular public space. looks at migrants who wish be buried or have close kin friends in Luxembourg, a small country Northwestern Europe. Disposition dead host instead post-mortal repatriation is often seen as sign belonging. However, choice must understood context set constraints that can experienced variety ways. Examining three contested issues cemeteries (burial practices, grave design, perpetuity), we show how both negotiated challenged by individual migrant communities, highlighting different lived citizenship. Based on participant experiences narratives, argue for necessity valuing managing less bounded spaces foster during life after, permeable transformative contact zones which citizenship enacted.
